Welcome to SixOneSeven Design. The idea of this website is to act as a platform for the designs created by SixOneSeven designers. Focused products for niche markets, we pride ourselves on finding design solutions to simple yet difficult problems.

Focused design is the core philosophy of SixOneSeven – and we strive to provide the simplest form of solution possible while utilizing elegant and unique design strategies.

Motorsports was in my blood from an early age, and I was fortunate enough to spend some time behind the wheel of a few race cars myself. That passion evolved into a more technical form by way of engineering school. Starting in my hometown of Vancouver, and then re-locating to Western University in Ontario for my final years. The learning experience combined with some incredible mentors, friends and classmates led to a design engineer position in Toronto. From there, the education continued – learning how to handle challenging design problems in a high paced environment, all while managing the challenging constraints of the production world. The journey continued shortly after, moving to Boston to work as a design engineer for a tech start-up focused on one thing – improving the time spent in motion. Active suspension concepts have opened my eyes to the idea of finding solutions to problems that many people assume will never go away. Since then, I have been questioning many design related problems I had experienced in the past. These questions have led to creativity, designs, and ultimately this platform of SixOneSeven.

I hope you enjoy the site and the ideas – MDH

Innovation and iteration have been the driving forces throughout my career. My signature approach is to apply tight iteration loops to design, implementation, analysis, and revision. Raw innovation can be a expensive, challenging and noisy endeavour. However, I fully believe it is possible to refine reliable, repeatable systems that minimize the cost of iterations and increase the probability of achieving successful outcomes. I’ve been fortunate to be able to apply this approach to a number of domains over the past 25 years working on software, firmware, hardware, and now mechanical product designs and manufacturing.

My current area of focus is to create an efficient and productive process for iterating designs using modern digital production tools like additive (3D Printing) and subtractive (CNC machining). A lot is often lost in translation between a modern product designer and the strengths and limitations of the processes involved. My goal is to educate designers about core immovable DFM constraints, but also to revisit these processes with a fresh approach to try remove arbitrary obstacles and antiquated barriers that cause friction for no reason.

Contributing to the 617 Team with Michael is an incredible opportunity to demonstrate the potential for a tightly coupled process between inspired mechanical product design and rapid iteration manufacturing and feedback loops. I’m excited to be on the journey.
